The Electrical Engineer will primarily be responsible for the design of renewable energy and energy storage installations.  They will undertake a range of engineering activities, depending on our clients’ needs, including producing system specifications, drawings and calculations, analysing performance data, undertaking surveys and inspections and composing professional advice.

Engineers of all levels will also be involved in sales and worksearch activities, such producing and managing proposals to clients.

Description

Cooper Energy Engineering Ltd is a small professional engineering practice specialising in solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage system design. We provide design services and technical support for commercial installers and EPCs, as well as consultancy services including grid connection, feasibility studies, design optimisation and due diligence.

We are looking for a professional Electrical Engineer to join our small team in East Northamptonshire, reporting directly to the Director / Senior Engineer and taking a leading role in providing high quality design services to our clients in the commercial solar PV and energy storage industry.

Your work will vary depending on our clients’ needs but will principally be producing electrical and system designs for renewable energy, energy storage and HV connection projects. We are a small team and so your designs will span multiple disciplines, including:
  • Equipment selection
  • PV array DC wiring
  • Power circuits
  • SCADA and networking systems
  • Earthing
  • Protection
  • Auxiliary supplies & services
You will be producing calculations, creating designs and drawings, performing simulations, and undertaking surveys. You may also deal with enquiries from clients, attend meetings, draft reports and produce proposals for projects.

You must be proficient with MS Office and AutoCAD packages, and you will have fluent written and oral communication skills in English. You will have degree-level qualifications in a relevant discipline and be able to demonstrate a theoretical and practical understanding of electrical system design and installation through at least three years’ design experience in the renewable energy, HV power systems or M&E/MEP sectors in the UK. We do have projects overseas so experience of international standards would be an advantage.

Your job will involve regularly using specialist CAD packages including PVSyst, Amtech ProDesign, AutoCAD and others. You will also be expected to be able to produce your own calculations where necessary, using or creating a tool appropriate to the task. You will also be expected to compose formal written reports of your findings.

While this is an office-based design role, previous project-management or construction experience would be an advantage, and a knowledge of how designs are practically implemented is essential. The role will involve surveys and site meetings, and you may be required to travel.

You may, from time to time, be given responsibility for junior member(s) of staff. Conversely, you may be expected to work directly with clients as part of their project team.

We will expect you to develop professionally while you work with us, and we will encourage you to work towards professional accreditation (e.g. MIET, CEng). In return, we will offer you a chance to work on a varied range of projects, including some of the largest solar and energy storage parks in the UK and abroad.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designing renewable energy systems, primarily PV and battery energy storage, in accordance with relevant standards
  • Producing detailed drawings and schedules
  • Producing CAD models and performance simulations
  • Creating specifications and calculating equipment / cable specifications
  • Surveying prospective sites, existing installations and in-progress construction work
  • Writing engineering reports and critical studies
  • Peer review of internal and external technical documents, drawings and calculations
  • Seeking, submitting and managing sales proposals to clients
  • The job is client-facing so candidates must have clear communication skills
  • All engineers are responsible for their continuous professional development, which we will actively support

This list is not comprehensive and similar tasks, duties and responsibilities may be assigned as part of the job role. The exact balance of tasks assigned will vary with employees’ abilities and our current needs.
